About Bits
Bits is a compliance platform for regulated financial companies in the EU. Onboarding, risk scoring, transaction monitoring, ongoing due diligence and case management all live in one place, so nothing falls through the cracks.
More than 30 regulated companies run their compliance on Bits: payment companies, lenders, crypto platforms, and fund and investment managers. Most come to Bits when manual work and separate tools can no longer keep up with their growth. Right now, much of Bits' work is helping customers prepare for the EU AML Regulation, which applies from July 2027.
The challenge: delivering the same KYB depth in every market
Several Bits customers wanted to expand into multiple European countries at the same time. Supporting them meant running KYB with the same depth and auditability in five or six markets at once. The data sources available to Bits did not make that consistent from one country to the next.
Four problems kept coming up:
- Coverage gaps in some countries
- Uneven data quality from one market to the next
- Unstructured responses that Bits had to normalise itself
- Limited access to UBO registers, the part that matters most for a compliance product
Two things then made the issue urgent. Concrete customer deals depended on multi-country coverage. And Bits made a strategic choice to build its platform for the whole of Europe, beyond its Nordic base. At that point, data stopped being a nice-to-have and became a blocker.
Why Bits chose Topograph
Bits went looking for data quality first and UBO access second. For Marcus Björklund, Head of Product and Compliance at Bits, that also meant finding a partner who knew each local register and its quirks, instead of pretending the data looks the same everywhere.
"We wanted a data partner who really understood the difficulties to enter a new market."
Bits compared several providers over a couple of months. Switching data provider is a big decision for a compliance platform, so there was no single deciding moment. Topograph came out ahead on the criteria Bits cared about: structured data, access to UBO registers, and a team that knows where each market's data falls short and how to work with it.
Structured data was one of the gaps Bits needed to close, and it shapes what Bits can build on top.
"If we at Bits build a product on top of Topograph's data models, I believe that we can build a much better product for the end users."
Working together
Asked how the relationship compares with other suppliers, Marcus pointed to how feedback is handled.
"Another thing that really stood out with Topograph is that you were always open to hear our feedback about the product itself, or the API. We always felt very heard, and you were always very fast to change the things that you agreed could be better. It feels more like a partnership where we are building something great together than being just another customer."
What's next
As its customers expand into new markets, Bits wants Topograph to grow alongside them. The next step for the partnership: more jurisdictions and deeper ownership data.
