What is the RBO Beneficial Ownership Extract?
In Ireland, the RBO Beneficial Ownership Extract (officially titled "List of Beneficial Owners/Controllers") is issued by the Register of Beneficial Ownership of Companies and Industrial and Provident Societies (RBO). The register was set up under the European Union (Anti-Money Laundering: Beneficial Ownership of Corporate Entities) Regulations 2019, so it is the Irish channel through which the EU's anti-money-laundering rules are applied.
Every Irish company and industrial and provident society must identify its beneficial owners and file their details with the RBO. A beneficial owner is any natural person who ultimately owns or controls more than 25% of the shares or voting rights. But where no such person can be identified, the entity registers its senior managing officials instead.
The extract is usually short (one page, or two when many owners are listed), and in KYC/KYB workflows it is used to verify the declared beneficial owners of an Irish entity.
What does it contain?
The layout stays consistent across entity types, because it is generated straight from the register. There are two blocks: entity identification and beneficial owner details.

1. Document title
The top of the page shows the RBO logo and the title "List of Beneficial Owners/Controllers", which confirms the document's origin.
2. Entity information
The first table identifies the entity:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
Number | The company registration number (CRO number) |
Name | The legal name of the entity |
Type | The entity type (e.g. "Company") |
The section header reads "Company / Industrial provident Society", because those are the two categories the register covers.
3. Current beneficial owners
The second table, headed "Current Beneficial Owners", lists each declared owner or controller. For each individual it shows:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
Name | Full name of the beneficial owner |
Year / Month Born | Partial date of birth (YYYY/MM) |
Nationality | Nationality of the individual |
Country Of Residence | Country where the individual resides |
Nature of Interest / Control | Type of interest (e.g. "Shares", "Senior Managing Official") |
Extent of Interest / Control (%) | Percentage held, where applicable |
Extent of Interest / Control (text) | Free-text description used when no percentage applies |
Direct, Indirect, Both or Neither | How the interest is held |
And where an entity has several beneficial owners, these fields simply repeat for each person in the same table.
The "Nature of Interest / Control" field drives how the rest of the row reads, and the examples show two patterns. When it says Shares, the person owns through shares, so the percentage field is populated (e.g. 100%) and the directness field reads "Direct" or "Indirect". When it says Senior Managing Official, no natural person met the 25% threshold, so the entity registered its senior managing officials instead: the percentage is left blank, the text field states the official’s role ("Senior Managing Official", "Executive Director", or "Independent Non-Executive Director" in the examples), and the directness field still reads "Direct" or "Indirect".
4. Date and pagination
The footer shows the date and time of extraction (e.g. "28/05/2026 18:51") and the page number (e.g. "Page 1 of 1"; extracts listing many owners continue onto a second page). That timestamp matters, because the extract is only a point-in-time snapshot of what the register held at that moment.
What is not included?
The extract gives only the year and month of birth, but never the full date. It shows the country of residence, yet no residential address. And it carries no information on directors, registered office, share capital, or incorporation date, and no QR or verification code for authenticity checks. So for that wider profile, you would pair the extract with filings from the Companies Registration Office (CRO).
With Topograph
Topograph retrieves RBO Beneficial Ownership Extracts for Irish entities as part of your KYC/KYB workflows. You can:
- Retrieve the official list of beneficial owners for any Irish company.
- Get structured data, like ownership percentages, nationality, and nature of control.
- Cross-reference RBO data with CRO filings, because a single source rarely tells the whole story.
And because Topograph parses the extract into structured, machine-readable data, beneficial ownership checks drop straight into automated compliance pipelines.
